Highlights from the 2023-2024 Winter Athletics Season

March 07, 2024

After plenty of hard work, great displays of collaboration, and plenty of school spirit, Léman’s student athletes have closed out the 2024 Winter Athletics Season. Read on to enjoy some of this season’s highlights, directly from our Director of Athletics, Keith Sequeira, and our Assistant Athletics Director, Nick Driskill.

Girls Grades 7/8 Basketball
Our Girls 7/8th Grade Basketball Team ended up 2nd place in the Independent School Athletics League (ISAL). Led by eighth graders Malia B. (who was this season’s leading scorer) and Sadie H., the team achieved an overall record of 7-3.

The team had several close wins during the course of the season, including against Birch Wathen Lenox (18-17) and Saint Ann’s (22-20), during which the Léman Bulls earned the win with last second shots. While the team’s roster was small, every single player contributed to the overall success of the team.

Girls Varsity Basketball
Our Girls Varsity Basketball team had a good season, which focused on development and learning how to be competitive. The team was led by three seniors: Dianne A., Stevie F., and Mika H. They provided an excellent example of sportsmanship to their younger teammates and helped the team develop and grow both on and off of the basketball court.

Throughout the season, our Girls Varsity Basketball Team benefitted from great competitive experiences. Traveling to Nova Scotia, Canada to compete early in the season helped build team chemistry and establish the way the team ultimately would compete during every game. Coming back from Canada, the team won three out of their four first games back in the Big Apple, which led the team to become even more confident both as a group and individually. The team finished the regular season as the 4th seed entering into the Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (ACIS) Girls Basketball Playoffs.

Boys Grades 7/8 Basketball
With over 50 points scored across all of their games and wrapping up with an 8-7 record, the Boys Grades 7/8 Basketball team had a rather good season. What’s more, eighth graders Nunzio P. and Ilario B-P scored over twenty points each across several games.

Huge shout out to student managers twelfth grader Isabella A. and eighth grader Leonie L., who played an integral part in the team’s success.

Boys Varsity Basketball
The boys team rounded out the winter season having learned valuable lessons that will aid them in the following year.

Early on in the season, the team traveled to Nova Scotia to compete against other schools, ultimately leaving Canada with stronger bonds and an understanding of how to navigate adversity together. Upon their return, the team secured victory in six consecutive games thanks to hard work and exceptional teamwork.

Boys Junior Varsity Basketball
The Boys Junior Varsity Team had an exciting season! In addition to the great progress the team made as a collective, two players in particular had standout seasons. Huge shout outs to tenth grader Maddox R. and ninth grader Asher A. who respectively nearly scored 40 and 30 points in an individual game.

Varsity Indoor Track
The Indoor Track team had a season defined by individual and team success. Over the course of the season, athletes maintained a steady progression of achieving personal bests, demonstrating their steadfast resolve and dedication to their athletic pursuits.

Additionally, congrats are in order to junior Blair W., sophomore Gwen R., and freshman Tara E., who’s hard work led them to qualify for the NYSAIS Championships.

Grades 7/8 Swim
Our 7th and 8th grade swimmers grew by leaps and bounds over the course of this season. This season, the Bulls were led by eighth graders Luca A. and Stella H-M, the team’s Individual Medley Specialists and leading scorers. Alongside our 5th-6th grade swimmers, the Middle School Swim Team posted numerous best times and raced a variety of different strokes each week, showcasing their versatility as athletes as well as their perseverance and dedication to their team. “Rising to the challenge” is an innate part of what Léman Bulls do best!

Co-Ed Varsity Swim
This season for Varsity swim was marked by remarkable achievements and outstanding performances. The men's team clinched victory in the 200 Freestyle relay at the ISAL Championships, with stellar contributions from twelfth graders William C. and Orwayn G., and eleventh graders Zach G. and Charles W. At the ISAL championship meet, William finished first in both the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke.

Tenth grader Miyah C. demonstrated her skill with a third-place finish in the 100 Fly and contributed to the Women's 200 Medley relay's third-place finish alongside tenth grader Laila S., twelfth grader Melissa S., and eleventh grader Didem H. Notably, every swimmer achieved personal best times, a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout the season. The seniors – Melissa Schmitt, Jotham Kriakos, William Caro, and Orwayn Gomes – demonstrated exceptional leadership and left a lasting impact on our team.

Varsity Table Tennis
With many members of the team being totally new to the sport, the members of the Varsity Tennis Team had a chance to really sharpen their skills, especially in regard to building strong fundamentals. Overall, the team expressed great pride in how much they were able to improve and enjoyed the opportunity to compete with other strong teams across the city.
