Kindergarten Scientists Discover a Tiny Ecosystem

October 14, 2026

Our Kindergarten scientists explored Ms. McHenry’s miniature habitat, where decomposing wood provides shelter and nutrients for a variety of living organisms. Using their new science notebooks, students documented their observations through drawings, identifying both living and non-living elements within the habitat. They also had the opportunity to gently hold rolly-pollies and help care for these tiny creatures by using spray bottles to keep their environment moist.

Students discovered that different organisms have unique needs to survive, including rolly-pollies’ preference for moist environments. The activity encouraged curiosity, strengthened observational skills, and deepened their understanding of how living things interact with their surroundings.
