Léman Faculty and Staff Build Tower Garden with Help from an LCA Teacher Innovation Grant

The Broad Street Café has become a little greener due to the generosity and support of the Léman Community Association. Funding was provided through an LCA Teacher Innovation Grant to the team of Chef Susy, Mrs. Calvanico, and Ms. Wolber for the purchase of three aeroponic Tower Gardens. These gardens now live in the café at 41 Broad Street and are growing a variety of organic vegetables such as lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs. This enhancement will provide students with opportunities to learn the science behind sustainable growing, taste and enjoy the harvest in their school lunches, and lessen our carbon footprint as a Léman Manhattan community. Over the last few weeks, Broad Street students have been eagerly watching the plants grow as they enjoy their daily lunches. Third grade also visited the Tower Gardens in conjunction with their life science unit to learn how this unique system grows crops without soil while using less than 10% of the water required for regular planting. Our first crop of lettuce was harvested this week and we are looking forward to enjoying more tasty treats soon!
