PreK 2 Students Learn the Importance of Being a Good Community Member Through Emotions Unit

Léman's PreK 2 program is designed to foster social, emotional, cognitive and physical development while building confidence and independence. In alignment with this goal, PreK 2 classes recently participated in an important and powerful unit on emotions. Developing an emotional vocabulary gives greater context to many areas of young children's lives and gives them the tools to express their feelings more successfully. As the vocabulary of emotions becomes more available to children, they become better able to self-soothe and develop empathy for friends, which helps prepare them for becoming a successful member of a classroom community in preschool. Activities in the unit included looking at photographs and illustrations to determine how the person feels, reading age-appropriate books such as My Many Colored Days and The Feelings Book, singing "If You're Happy and You Know It," and participating in classroom discussions around what this new vocabulary means in an everyday context to help them gain insight into their own feelings and the world around them.
