Senior Spotlight - Hrishika Chakraborty

June 07, 2017

Hrishika Chakraborty '17 graduated from Léman on a high note. The Queens, NY native made her mark at Léman as a full IB Diploma candidate, Co-Coordinator of the Student Ambassador Program, Captain of the Girls Varsity Volleyball Team, Co-Founder of the Léman Dance Team, and a member of the National Honor Society. On June 3, she took the stage at the Class of 2017 Graduation Ceremony as the student speaker, an honor bestowed on her by the Upper School faculty, who nominated her to speak.

For Hrishika, enrolling at Léman in the 8th Grade was a big change. "In public school, I was one of 1,000 students in my grade, and I started at Léman with a class of 28." Her class has now more than doubled in size. "When I started the IB program in 11th Grade, I thought, 'now I have to get my head in the game.' The IB has taught me a lot about myself academically. It's about independence under structure. You have to get a lot done, but you have to do it on your own, which is just what it's like in college."

Hrishika will enroll at George Washington University in Washington, DC in the fall, which she chose because of its excellent reputation in the humanities and journalism. "Applying to college was difficult," she said, "it was a lot of writing and taking tests, but I met with (College Counselor) Ms. Barcham throughout the process and she answered all of my questions, which made it easier. With the help of everyone in the Léman community, it went pretty smoothly for me."

Although she's excited about college and to move to a new city, she knows that it will be a big change. "I'll miss the faculty and the community at Léman," she said, "I'm pretty good friends with a lot of my senior and junior teachers because I studied with them for two years in the IB program. There's always a friendly face here. There's also a sense of camaraderie with all of the IB students since we're all going through the same process," she said, "Léman provides you with amazing opportunities, but it depends on what you do with them to make your high school experience great."
