Several of our fine arts students have recently been recognized and awarded for their achievements by prestigious arts institutions. Read on for some exciting news from our dedicated and talented students.

Giuseppe Fu (11) - based on his high NYSSMA  (New York State School Music Association) Solo Festival scores last year, Giuseppe has achieved All-State status and has been selected to perform with the New York All-State Symphonic Band. He will represent Léman at the NYSSMA All-State Festival in Rochester, NY,  in December. He is the first Léman student to qualify for All-State. In addition, Giuseppe won first prize at the International Trombone Association’s George Roberts Bass Trombone Competition in CA this summer.  In the past ten years, only one other high school student has won this competition, which is typically won by college students.

Ryan Phuc Hong Nguyen (12)  - Ryan’s digital composition, Ground Breaker, was chosen for performance at the 22nd Annual Electronic Music Composition Showcase organized by the New York State School Music Association. Ryan’s piece, which he composed last year in Léman’s Digital Music elective course, was chosen alongside 10 other winners from across New York to be performed for teachers and students attending the NYSSMA showcase in December.

Refilwe Kekana (11) - Refilwe recently performed at Carnegie Hall with the Manhattan Girls Chorus, a prestigious group made up of high-achieving young singers throughout New York City. The group performed Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 3 "Kaddish" along with the American Symphony Orchestra.

Madeline Alexander (11) & Femi Shonuga-Fleming (11) - Maddie and Femi were recently selected for an art mentorship program with the Smack Mellon Gallery in Brooklyn. As part of the selection process, they had to submit artwork and essays as well as participate in an interview. This program will allow them to study with several different artists and visit many artists' studios over the span of 7 months. The program culminates in an exhibition of student work.
